Cricket South Africa (CSA) has said that they will let their south African players decide whether to play in the Indian Premier League IPL 2022 or not. Else, make them available for national duty when there is a clash of schedules of the matches. Dean Elgar Test match captain has revealed that he will try to convince his teammates to play in the home series against Bangladesh (BAN).
The IPL 15th Season will overlap with Bangladesh’s tour of South Africa, consisting of 2 Tests and 3 ODIs. While the league starts on 26th March 2022, the series between Bangladesh (BAN) and South Africa (SA) will go on from 18th March – 12th April 2022. In the Test series, 4 South African fast bowlers – Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, and Anrich Nortje are the 1st-choice players.
Dean Elgar to convince South African Players to choose national duty over IPL 2022
The Bangladesh Tour of South Africa 2022 is an international Series, and also part of Future Tour Programs announced by ICC in 2009. South Africa will host the Series from 18th March 2022. The 1st ODI match between SA vs BAN will be played at SuperSport Park, Centurion on 18th March at 01:30 local time onwards.
Elgar believes the players must take a clear decision to play or to choose national duty over IPL 2022. The South Africa Test captain reminded his teammates that it was their performances in international cricket that earned them the Indian Premier League deals.

“I owe it to our group the best chance to make a decision” – Dean Elgar
South African eleven cricketers have contracts for the 15th Season of IPL 2022. 6 of them are Test regulars while 3 of them are in the ODI squad. The bowlers include Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, and Marco Jansen. The batters having IPL commitments named Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, Dwaine Pretorious, and David Miller.
“Just this morning I got off a call with the respective personnel at CSA to try and give us a guideline as to whether the players will be available or not. Players need to give CSA an indication whether they’re keen to go to the Indian Premier League or if they’re keen to play for the Test side,” Elgar told in a virtual press conference on 4th March 2022.
However, they also have IPL contracts. Leaving the decision to the players would seem like the right call but Dean Elgar reminded them of their roots and how they earned the contract in the 1st place.
“It’s a tough decision for the players, but this is how we’ll see where their loyalty stays. They must not forget that Test series and one-day cricket got them into the IPL, not the other way around.”
“That’s all I can give you now. I wish I had more, just for my own personal sanity. So I can prepare, knowing that most of my bowlers are potentially not going to be there if they choose to go the IPL route,” he further added.
