IPL 2022: Faf du Plessis Named New RCB Captain- Royal Challengers Bangalore appoint Faf Du Plessis as New Captain

Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday appointed skipper Faf du Plessis of the South Africa cricket team. Now Plessis will captain the RCB team in the next Indian Premier League season.

Du Plessis is one of the consistent performers for Chennai Super Kings. Du Plessis was an obvious choice after Virat Kohli stepped down from his leadership role for the franchise after a decade. RCB has not won a single IPL trophy under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. He was bought by RCB for Rs 7 crore and is available for the entire season. Du Plessis was handed over the cap by team chairman Prathamesh Mishra and director cricket operations Mike Hesson at an event.

Obviously coming in as an outsider, I am very grateful for this opportunity,” du Plessis, who stepped down as South African captaincy across all formats in 2020, said.

Four-time IPL winner, the 37-year-old du Plessis has played 100 matches so far, scoring 2935 runs at a strike rate of over 131. He scored 633 runs for CSK in last year’s IPL winning campaign

Du Plessis, who has retired from all forms of international cricket, said, “I have played a lot of IPL cricket. I understand the dynamics and it is not a small thing to rely on an outsider who acts as a leader.”

He made it clear that he will depend a lot on the experience of a domestic player and someone of Virat Kohli’s caliber.

“I will rely heavily on the amazing experience that we have in our domestic Players but also the International Players”. Du Plessis further said he would look to work in tandem with their former captain Kohli who led the side since 2014.

We have got great captains. We have got one of the great leaders in the game in Virat. That will be my shadow and making sure that we bounce off everything of each other.

“I couldn’t be happier for the team and Faf. He is a good friend and we are very good. Hoping for a good season,” said outgoing captain Kohli.

Du Plessis, who captains Royal Challengers with Rahul Dravid, Kevin Pietersen, Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori, Kohli and Shane Watson, will be in seventh place. Among them, Kohli has captained the team in most matches – 64 wins, 69 losses, three ties and four no results in 140 matches, with a win percentage of 48.16. While this would be du Plessis’ first captaincy assignment in the IPL, he has led several teams in the T20 format, including South Africa and a World XI in international cricket. Comilla Victorians, Paarl Rocks, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and St Lucia Kings are the other teams led by du Plessis in T20Is. He has been the T20 captain in the first 79 matches with a win percentage of 55.76 with 43 wins, 34 losses, one tie and one result.

Du Plessis has played 100 matches (93 innings) in the Indian Premier League so far, in which he has scored 2935 runs at an average of 34.94 and a strike rate of 131.08, including 22 half-centuries. In the last four seasons of the IPL, he has scored 1640 runs in 47 innings, out of which 633 runs came in 2021.
