Papua New Guinea played its first Twenty20 International against Ireland on 15 July 2015 at Stormont, Belfast and the last T20I match was played against Scotland at the Oman Cricket Academy Ground Turf 1, Muscat on 19 October 2021. PNG’s ICC ranking is 18th in T20Is and 20th in One-day Internationals (ODIs).

The Papua New Guinea cricket team has been placed in Group B of Round 1. From that, the team will have to beat their fellow rival teams (Bangladesh, Scotland and Oman) to qualify for the Super-12. As of now total 8 teams will play in the qualifying round and out of these 4 teams will enter the main stage of the tournament. In Group A, two teams from Ireland, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Namibia will qualify for the Super-12.

The Barramundis have named a 16-member squad, led by their regular Skipper Assad Vala for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.
This is the first time PNG will be making their ICC global tournament debut, kicking off their T20 world Cup 2021 companion with an opening clash against co-hosts Oman on 17 October.
Vala’s PNG 15-Man Squad won 5 of their 6 Group Matches at the Men’s T20 WC Qualifier in 2019. And they finished as runners-up, losing the final to the Netherlands.
In April 2018, the ICC decided to grant full Twenty20 International (T20I) status to all its Members. Therefore, all Twenty20 matches played between Papua New Guinea and other ICC members since 1 January 2019 have been a full T20I.
