There Can’t Be Two White-Ball Captains

The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said that there can’t be two white-ball captains in the Indian Men’s cricket team.

On Wednesday, the senior selection committee has made a big announcement on Rohit Sharma replacing Virat Kohli as One Day Internationals (ODI) captain. Rohit got a leadership role in all 3 formats of the game. Along with the ODI Captaincy, Rohit was permanently made vice-captain in Test Cricket; also he was previously appointed as T20I captain after Virat stepped down from the T20 World Cup 2021.

Sourav Ganguly stated that the big decision made on captaincy change Indian cricket. They said that they had requested Kohli not to quit the T20I captaincy. But Kohli did not agree & selectors didn’t want to have two white-ball captains.

“We had requested Virat not to step down as T20I captain but he didn’t want to continue as captain. So, the selectors felt that they cannot have two white-ball captains in two white-ball formats. That’s too much of leadership.”

He added – “I don’t know (about confusion) but that’s what they (selectors) felt. That’s how this conclusion was arrived at – that let Rohit captain in white-ball and let Virat be the red-ball skipper,”

He also elaborated – The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) president said that they did consider Virat’s outstanding record as ODI captain. But Rohit Sharma has also done an outstanding job for India whenever he led the team India. Also, Sourav revealed that he himself & selectors chairman Chetan Sharma also spoke to Kohli before the decision was made.

“We did consider that (Kohli’s outstanding record as ODI captain) but if you look at Rohit’s record in whatever ODIs he has captained for India, it’s very good. Bottom line, there can’t be two white-ball captains.”

“Yes, I have spoken to Virat personally and chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma also spoke to him on the issue.”

Full-time T20I captain, Rohit Sharma helped Team India to win the home T20I series against New Zealand (NZ) by 3-0. Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly was hoping that Rohit Sharma does a great job in the upcoming games for Team India. He Said – “It’s very difficult to predict. I wish him all the best and I hope he does a good job.”
