Tim Southee to captain New Zealand T20I series against India

Kane Williamson skipped New Zealand’s T20I Series against India, Tim Southee Named Captain for 1st Match in SMS Stadium Jaipur. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will miss the three-Match T20I series against India starting November 17 to Prepare for the Two-Test Series. 

The New Zealand cricket team is on the Indian side for a 3-match T20I and a 2-match Test series. The T20I series will start on 17th November and the first match will be held on 17th November 2021 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The second match will be played on November 19 in Ranchi and the third match will be played on November 21 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

New Zealand team captain Kane Williamson will not play in this T20 series. It is reported that Williamson will prepare for the two-Test series starting after the T20I matches. The first match of the Test series will start from 25 November and the second match will start from 3 December. Therefore, Tim Southee has been made the captain in place of Kane Williamson in the T20 series against India.

So Tim Southee will lead the team in the first match in Williamson’s absence. New Zealand lost to Australia in the T20 World Cup final held on 14 November. In such a situation, there was also talk of leaving the captaincy of Kane Williamson from T20 cricket. But the New Zealand Cricket Board said it had decided to allow Williamson to prepare for two red-ball matches with the Test team.

“New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will skip the three-game Twenty20 series against India this week to prepare for the test series that starts this month, the team said on Tuesday.”

Apart from Kane, Southee and other teammates Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner are also set to join the Test squad when the series begins in Kanpur on November 25.

The second Test starts in Mumbai on December 3. Big names are missing from the Indian Test team but New Zealand coach Gary Stead believes that the hosts will still present a big challenge.

Indian captain Virat Kohli has decided not to play the first two Tests while batsman Rohit Sharma, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami will be ruled out of the series.

Seamer Trent Boult and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme opted out of the tour due to the possibility of spending more time in the bio-secure bubble, while batsman Devon Conway has been ruled out of the series due to a World Cup injury to his hand.

However, regular Test players like Ross Taylor, Tom Latham and Neil Wagner will make a comeback as the Black Caps look for their maiden series win in India.
